Family Court Filings for Eden Prairie Residents

Eden Prairie residents file dissolution of marriage cases under Minnesota Statutes Chapter 518 at the Hennepin County Government Center. Minnesota is a no-fault state. The only required ground is that the marriage is irretrievably broken. At least one spouse must have lived in Minnesota for 180 days before filing. You do not need to prove any specific fault or misconduct to get a divorce.

When children are part of a case, both parents must complete a parenting education program under Minn. Stat. § 518.157. The class is a required step before the court finalizes the case. A parenting plan must also be submitted. Child custody is determined under Minn. Stat. § 518.17, using the best interests of the child standard. The court evaluates the child's relationship with each parent, the child's needs, and what arrangement will best support the child's overall welfare.

Child support calculations follow the guidelines in Minn. Stat. Chapter 518A. The formula accounts for both parents' incomes and the parenting time share. Paternity cases must be resolved before custody or support orders can be entered for unmarried parents. Exhibits in Hennepin County family court hearings must be submitted through MNDES.
