Grant County Family Court Record Types

Family court records in Grant County include all filings in dissolution, custody, support, paternity, and domestic abuse cases. Each case type has its own set of documents. A dissolution of marriage file starts with the petition and summons, then adds financial disclosures, any agreements reached during the case, and ends with the final judgment and decree. That decree is the official court order ending the marriage.

Minnesota uses a no-fault dissolution system under Chapter 518. Either spouse can file. The only required ground is that the marriage is irretrievably broken. Once the petition is filed, the case proceeds through service, response, any motions, and eventually either a settlement or a trial. All documents filed become part of the public record in MCRO, subject to restrictions.

Custody decisions follow the best interests of the child standard in Minn. Stat. 518.17. The court weighs multiple factors including each parent's relationship with the child, the child's adjustment, and each parent's ability to provide ongoing care. Child support uses the income shares formula in Chapter 518A. Both parents' incomes are used to calculate the obligation, adjusted for parenting time.

Most family court records in Grant County are public. You do not have to be a party to request a copy. Adoption records, juvenile files, mental health proceedings, and sealed documents are restricted. Financial exhibits are also not public because they contain sensitive personal data.

Filing and Copy Fees
