Family Court Filings in Nobles County

The Nobles County District Court handles all family law matters in Worthington. Dissolution of marriage is governed by Chapter 518. Minnesota is a no-fault state. The only ground is irretrievable breakdown of the marriage. You file in the county where you live. One spouse must have been a Minnesota resident for 180 days before filing.

Child custody and parenting time cases are decided under the best interests standard in section 518.17. The court weighs each parent's relationship with the child, the child's stability at home and school, and the mental and physical health of all parties. Both legal custody and physical custody are determined in these cases. The court can modify orders if there has been a substantial change in circumstances.

Child support follows the income shares formula in Chapter 518A. Both parents' gross incomes and parenting time shares are used in the calculation. The court can enter, adjust, and enforce support orders. Paternity cases set the legal father and open the door to custody, parenting time, and support orders. Child protection matters go under Chapter 260C.
