Child custody and parenting time decisions follow Minn. Stat. Section 518.17. The judge looks at what is best for the child. That includes how involved each parent has been in the child's life, the child's age and needs, and any history of abuse or neglect. A parenting plan or parenting time schedule is usually entered as part of the final order in cases involving minor children.

Child support orders are calculated using the state income shares formula under Minnesota Statutes Chapter 518A. Both parents' incomes are factored in along with the number of children and how much time each parent spends with them. The county's child support office can help you understand the calculation or assist with enforcement of an existing order.

Paternity cases are filed here as well. Once a court establishes paternity, it can enter orders for custody and support. Protection orders for domestic abuse are also available through this court. Staff can provide forms and basic information about the process.
