Cook County Family Court Record Types
Cook County family court records include all domestic relations cases filed at the District Court. Divorce and dissolution of marriage cases under Minnesota Statutes Chapter 518 are the most common family court filings. The case file includes the petition, summons, financial affidavits, any temporary orders, a settlement agreement if the parties agreed, and the final judgment and decree. Most of these documents are public.
Custody and parenting time records are created when parents disagree about custody or when unmarried parents need a formal parenting arrangement. Courts in Cook County apply the best-interest standard in Minn. Stat. section 518.17. Parenting plans, custody evaluations, and court orders are part of the public case file unless sealed by the judge.
Child support cases are filed and tracked under Minnesota Statutes Chapter 518A. The court calculates support using both parents' incomes and the parenting time schedule. Support orders, enforcement records, and any modifications are on file. Paternity actions for children born outside of marriage are also handled here. The case file for a paternity case includes the petition, test results if applicable, and the final parentage order.
Confidential records not available to the public include adoption proceedings, juvenile cases, mental health commitments, and records sealed by order of the court. Child protection cases under Minnesota Statutes Chapter 260C are closed records. Contact the court clerk to confirm what is accessible in a specific file.
