Lake County Family Court Record Types
Lake County District Court handles the full range of family law cases. Dissolution of marriage cases under Minnesota Statutes Chapter 518 make up a large share of the court's family docket. The case file includes the original petition, financial disclosure forms, any agreement between the parties, and the final judgment and decree. That decree spells out the property division, custody terms, parenting schedule, and any support amounts.
Custody disputes and parenting time modifications are also common. When parents do not agree, the court uses the best interest factors in Minn. Stat. section 518.17 to decide. The judge looks at things like each parent's relationship with the child, the child's school and community ties, and each parent's ability to cooperate. The final custody order becomes part of the permanent court file.
Child support orders are set and modified under Minnesota Statutes Chapter 518A. The support amount is based on each parent's income, the number of children, and the amount of time each parent spends with the child. Paternity cases establish legal parentage and can be filed at any time after a child's birth. Protection order records are kept at the court as well, though access to those may be restricted.
