Family Law Cases in Norman County
Norman County District Court handles all categories of family law under Minnesota statute. Dissolution of marriage cases fall under Chapter 518. Minnesota only recognizes no-fault divorce. You simply show the marriage has broken down and cannot be saved. One spouse must have lived in Minnesota for at least 180 days before filing. The case is filed where you live.
Custody and parenting time cases use the best interests of the child standard from section 518.17. The court looks at each parent's bond with the child, stability at home and school, and the willingness of each parent to support the other's relationship with the child. Legal custody covers major decisions about health, education, and welfare. Physical custody covers where the child lives. Both can be shared or given to one parent.
Child support uses the income shares formula under Chapter 518A. Each parent's gross income and share of parenting time determine the obligation. The court can set, modify, and enforce support orders. Paternity cases establish the legal father. After paternity is established, custody, parenting time, and support can all be ordered by the same court. Child protection and CHIPS cases are heard under Chapter 260C.
